Trainee Awards

Trainee travel Awards

Ovarian Cancer Canada is pleased to offer travel awards to enhance the training of young scientists and to facilitate collaborative research in ovarian cancer.  These awards are designed to provide financial support for the travel and accommodations of ovarian cancer research trainees who travel to and work at another research centre to acquire knowledge and/or skills to enhance their own research project.  Travel awards will be up to $5,000 and are available to graduate students or postdoctoral fellows actively engaged in ovarian cancer research, for a visit to another research centre for a minimum duration of two weeks.  A maximum of $10,000 has been allocated to this initiative for 2013, with awards being distributed to meritorious applicants.  This award is a reimbursement grant, in other words, successful candidates submit the receipts for their travel and are reimbursed accordingly.

Eligibility

Applicant must be a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow actively involved in ovarian cancer research at a Canadian research institution.

Location of host research centre

There are no restrictions on the location of the research centre that will serve as host for the visiting trainee.  A letter from the sponsoring supervisor of the host laboratory is required to show agreement with the proposed visit.

GOC/OCC GALLOWAY TRAINEE AWARDS

With the aging of the population, the incidence of gynecologic cancers is expected to increase by 47% between 2001 and 2014, according to the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of Canada (GOC). At the same time, research has shown that outcomes following surgery are best when the surgery is done by a gynaecologic oncologist (there are approximately 86 gynecologic oncologists in Canada).

A few years ago, it was projected that if the then-current rate of obstetrics-gynecology residents choosing gynecologic oncology sub-specialization continued, it would be impossible to keep up with the demand for care. The result would be suboptimal treatment for women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers.

In response to this situation, in 2006 OCC partnered with GOC to provide grants to obstetrics and gynecology residents who choose gynecologic oncology as an elective.

OCC provides $1,500 to award recipients for housing and travel costs to a cancer centre in Canada or the United States to work with a gynecologic oncology team during a one-month elective. The aim is to increase the number of residents who choose this sub-specialty and to have them remain in Canada to practice.
