About the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope

What is the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope?

It is an annual event held in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada. The event is designed to raise awareness about the disease, raise significant funds for ovarian cancer and early detection and also to create a sense of community for women living with ovarian cancer and their family and friends.

There is no Walk in my community, how do I start an Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope?

If you do not live close to an existing Walk location, you can start your own Walk. Starting a Walk will help bring awareness of ovarian cancer to your community and it will also help fund crucial research and education programs that will help in our mission to detect ovarian cancer early.

For information about starting your own Walk, contact us at info@walkofhope.ca or call 1-877-413-7970.

What is the date of the 2012 Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope?

The Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope is being held on September 9, 2012. The Walk is held annually on the first Sunday after Labour Day Weekend.

* Please note that some Walks may take place on varying dates so please refer to our Walk Locations page for exact dates and times.

For more information on Ovarian Cancer Canada's programs and current research visit our website at www.ovariancanada.org

How do the funds raised help my local community or province?

Funds raised through the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope help to support a variety of local Ovarian Cancer Canada programs, production of resources, and education and awareness activities at the community level. Funds raised in your city’s Walk:

  • Makes it possible to grow and sustain regional offices and regional managers who provide a local presence and help to bring awareness of ovarian cancer to the community level.
  • Provides funding for Ovarian Cancer Canada to produce the only kit in Canada that is designed for newly diagnosed women. You Are Not Alone kits are distributed free of charge through all cancer centres.
  • Allows Ovarian Cancer Canada to provide free access to our Telephone Education Series for people across the country
  • Provides Regional managers, staff and volunteers the opportunity to participate in local conferences, events and health and wellness shows to increase awareness among the general public. National funds raised through the Walk determine the degree of local activity.
  • Makes it possible to maintain an accurate and up-to-date website including information, resources, stories and up-to-date research.
  • Allows production of numerous support materials and facts sheets that are designed and produced to facilitate education at regional awareness events.
  • Are allocated to each region based on a needs assessment to sustain educational programs for both health care professionals and women through our Ovarian Cancer: Knowledge is Power and Survivors Teaching Students programs.
  • Contribute to funding grants from all regions across Canada. All Ovarian Cancer Canada grants and funds are publicized and applications are received from all regions across Canada. The grant applications are reviewed by a panel and regardless of where the actual research takes place, the findings will benefit the ovarian cancer community across Canada.
What are your event expense costs?

$0.73 of every dollar goes directly to funding Ovarian Cancer Canada's programs and research initiatives.

I have sent offline pledges into the Ovarian Cancer Canada office and the donations are still showing as ‘pledged’ on my Personal Fundraising Account. Why?

If I pay for donations I receive in person using my credit card, who receives the tax receipt?

If your friend/team’s name still does not appear this may be because they have chosen to not make their name available to a public search. Please contact your friend or the team captain and ask them to email you the link to their person fundraising page.

Login to your Personal Fundraising Account and send e-mails by clicking on 'Get Sponsors' from the left hand navigation under the 'My Fundraising' tab. Option #2 allows you to use our system to send e-mails. Next, click on the 'Add From My Address Book' button and follow the on-screen instructions. You will then need to choose your e-mail service provider, sign-in to your account, and select the contacts. Click "Submit" to ensure those contacts are imported. For privacy reasons, neither your contacts nor your e-mail user and password will be retained by the system.

Which e-mail service providers can be imported through the Address Book?

The import tool supports: Outlook, Outlook Express, Yahoo, Gmail, and Plaxo. Please note: The address book is not compatible with Hotmail.

How do I manually add contacts in order to send e-mails?

Manually adding names can be done at any time. Enter the e-mail addresses separated by commas or semi-colons in the field provided under 'Get Sponsors', Option #2.

How do I send e-mails to my contacts?

If using your own personal e-mail account to send e-mail donation requests, refer to the e-mail you received with your personal fundraising page link. Then copy and paste the information from that e-mail and personalize it with your own message.

If you are using our tool to send e-mails to your contacts, you must first add or import the e-mails (see above). Once imported, you are ready to send e-mails asking for support. You can enter a personal message to accompany the default message from Ovarian Cancer Canada. Click on 'Send E-mail' and your message will be automatically sent.

Can I customize the messages?

If you are using our tool to send e‑mails to your contacts, you must first add or import the e‑mails (see above). Once imported, you are ready to send e‑mails to ask for support. Personal messages can also be added to customize your e-mail. Your customized message will be added to the default message from Ovarian Cancer Canada. Click on 'Send E‑mail' and your message will be automatically sent.

Your personal e‑mail account can also be used to send messages which allows for more flexibility to customize. Choose Option #1 under 'Get Sponsors' and send yourself an e‑mail. Be sure to include the important information in your e‑mail, such as the link to where your prospective sponsors can make their gift and the reasons why you are supporting the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope.

Where will bounced-back / undelivered e-mails be sent?

If you sent the email using your personal e-mail account, you will receive any bounce backs. Bounce-backs will be sent to the e-mail that was entered during registration.
