Since the Walk began in 2002, it has raised a cumulative total over $10 million. This is a great accomplishment for all of our Walkers, supporters and volunteers.
The money raised helps to fund:
- A number of support programs for women and their families living with the disease, including the You Are Not Alone kit which is designed for newly diagnosed women.
- Awareness initiatives and activities to let women and their families across Canada know about the disease and spreading the word during the month of September which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
- Education programs for health care professionals and the general public including Ovarian Cancer; Knowledge is Power free education program hosted by Ovarian Cancer Canada staff and volunteers in communities across the country.
- Ongoing ovarian cancer research to develop an early detection screening test, effective diagnosis, and improved treatments, ultimately leading to increased survival rates for women living with this disease.
The dollars that you raise allow us to continue to fund these programs and also support important research initiatives such as the breakthrough for ovarian cancer that was announced by the BC Cancer Agency in September 2010 and our recently announced program collaboration with the Terry Fox Research Institute pan-Canadian initiative called COEUR.
Our commitment to you is that we will continue to make research a priority in tandem with our ongoing work in support, awareness and education.
