Volunteers with a personal experience of ovarian cancer, whether as a survivor or a member of a family who has been affected by the disease, can help increase awareness by sharing their stories. Opportunities include:
Survivors Teaching Students - Saving Women’s Lives®
As part of this program, ovarian cancer survivors and/or members of their family share their personal experience with ovarian cancer with future healthcare professionals. These volunteers receive training and are called upon throughout the year to present in classrooms.
Meeting with elected representatives (Government Relations)
Furthering government relations efforts, women and family members who have personal experience with ovarian cancer meet with their elected officials to help improve the state of ovarian cancer in Canada.
These volunteer roles are ideal for individuals who are comfortable speaking in front of groups and have daytime availability.
Awareness raising can take place throughout the year or at particular times such as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in September and World Ovarian Cancer Day on May 8. It can occur at home or in a variety of community settings, the choice is yours. Activities may include:
Help promote the disease at events or online. Events may include trade shows, sporting events and health fairs. There are also certain times of year when large groups mobilize to help raise awareness in a community or through social media. You could be handing out resources during World Ovarian Cancer Day, supporting an activity during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in September, etc.
Knowledge is Power
Knowledge is Power is a program developed by Ovarian Cancer Canada to inform the public about this disease. Knowledge is Power volunteers are specially trained and they become responsible for finding opportunities to deliver awareness presentations.
These volunteer roles are ideal for individuals who are comfortable speaking in front of groups and have strong communications skills paired with a keen interest in sharing information about this disease.
The Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope is the country’s most powerful awareness and fundraising initiative dedicated to overcoming ovarian cancer. This annual family-friendly event is held on the 2nd Sunday in September during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in more than 40 communities.
The Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope is planned by a committee of volunteers working throughout the year to organize a Walk in their community. Committee roles vary and may include:
Recruitment & Sponsorship Co-Chair
Logistics and Operations Co-Chair
Social Media Lead
Food & Beverage Lead
Entertainment & Activity Lead
Park & Route Logistics Lead
On Walk day, volunteers assist with setting up, greeting participants, registration and more.
These volunteer roles are ideally suited for individuals or groups that are interested in event planning and are enthusiastic about community engagement.
Outgoing and enthusiastic volunteers help with the planning and guest experience at a variety of events in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada. Tasks may include greeting guests, assisting with silent auctions or promotional draws, or processing donations. Events vary region by region but may include:
LOVE HER is an elegant evening of fashion and fun to honour the women in our lives.
Volunteers are needed on event day to assist with preparations and delivery of the event.
This volunteer role is ideally suited for individuals or groups who are interested in event planning and enthusiastic about fundraising.
Host your own event
Community fundraising events are initiated by individuals, community groups, or businesses to raise funds for Ovarian Cancer Canada.
These events range from include golf tournaments, bake sales, concerts, galas, garage sales, art or jewellery sales, to everything in between. Each is independently designed, managed and delivered by community volunteers. If you like to organize a fundraiser, this volunteer experience could be right for you.
Host an event in your workplace
