ABOUT THE PROJECT

What is the Manitoba Ovarian Cancer Biobank Program (MOBP)?

Think of the MOBP as a specialized medical library. Since 2011, we have been collecting and storing samples—like blood, DNA, and small pieces of tumor tissue—donated by over 500 ovarian cancer patients. Along with these samples, we keep important health records about each patient’s diagnosis and treatment.

Why is it important?

Research is most effective when it uses real samples from real patients. Since 2011, we have collected more than 500 patient tumour samples that have been used for patient-oriented research, including:

  • Identifying new signalling pathways that contribute to our understanding of the ovarian cancer microenvironment.
  • Confirming how the genetic changes that occur in ovarian cancer cells that create genomic instability and contribute to chemotherapy resistance.
  • Developing new patient-derived xenograft models that reflect the Manitoba population.
  • Using patient samples to test and develop potential new therapies.

How does it work?

With a patient’s informed consent, we securely store their samples and clinical data. By matching laboratory findings with real patient outcomes, we can turn research discoveries into better treatments and more accurate tests for the future.

Our Goal

We want to grow this resource so more researchers can access the tools they need to improve the lives of people living with ovarian cancer.
