OVARIAN CANCER CANADA LAUNCHES NATIONAL CAMPAIGN URGING DECISION-MAKERS TO REACH AGREEMENT ON LIFE-EXTENDING OVARIAN CANCER TREATMENT

After years of advocacy, patients with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer are still waiting for access to a treatment approved by Health Canada and recommended for reimbursement.

TORONTO, ON – July 16, 2026 – Ovarian Cancer Canada is calling on Canadians to urge decision-makers to restart negotiations and secure public access to ELAHERE (mirvetuximab soravtansine), a treatment that offers new hope for women living with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer.

Although ELAHERE received Health Canada approval in September 2025 and was recommended for reimbursement by Canada’s Drug Agency (CDA), pricing negotiations between the pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance (pCPA) and AbbVie, the drug manufacturer, concluded without an agreement in May 2026. This means that eligible Canadians still cannot access the treatment through public drug plans.

ELAHERE is the first major new treatment for this type of ovarian cancer in more than 10 years. It is for adults whose ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer no longer responds to platinum-based chemotherapy. For patients living with these cancers, time is a luxury, and they cannot afford the loss of momentum that comes with stalled negotiations.

“Patients have done everything that has been asked of them. They have shared their experiences, participated in evidence submissions, met with decision-makers and waited through every stage of the regulatory process,” says Tania Vrionis, CEO, Ovarian Cancer Canada. “Now we need governments and AbbVie to demonstrate the same urgency and work together to reach an agreement.”

Ovarian Cancer Canada is encouraging Canadians to participate in its national advocacy campaign by sending letters to provincial and territorial decision makers, calling on all parties to resume negotiations as soon as possible and ensure eligible patients can access ELAHERE without further delay.
