Thank you, Saskatchewan! - $1 Million for Ovarian Cancer Research
July 23, 2020.
If you follow us on social, you saw this happy news we shared first on Canada Day and thought it was worth repeating here, too! Yeah, we’re just that stoked about it!
As a community, we push for change and increased funding for research of ovarian cancer to help save women’s lives. We are inspired and thankful to the Government of Saskatchewan for keeping a sharp focus on women’s health and ovarian cancer with a new investment of $1 million to fund life saving research.
In 2019 the Government of Canada announced a first-ever and long-sought commitment of $10 million for ovarian cancer research initiatives led by Ovarian Cancer Canada. Provinces are stepping forward to augment that investment! Nova Scotia was the first province to come on board with an investment of $1 million announced in February of this year and now Saskatchewan is building on this bold leadership move at the provincial level, adding an additional $1 million to bolster Ovarian Cancer Canada‘s research initiatives.
This investment builds on existing health care systems and programs in Saskatchewan that have been put in place to address ovarian cancer, including taking concrete steps to address a critical shortage of gynecologic oncologists in the province as of 2018, and steadily growing the number of doctors available to support and treat women affected by the disease.
In this current time, we are reminded that fatal diseases require urgent attention and focus to save lives. We look forward to working in collaboration and partnership with the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, the University of Saskatchewan and other provincial cancer leaders to leverage this $1 million investment in the most effective way, benefitting women diagnosed with, and at risk of, the disease not only in this province, but in Canada and across the world.
