A Breath of Fresh Hair - Changing the narrative

Meet Ann. Ann Squires Ferguson’s ovarian cancer journey began at a time in her life when she was living a healthy, active lifestyle. “Getting diagnosed with cancer while living this healthy lifestyle makes me realize that it is pure chance, not my fault in any way, and that I am still healthy – I just happen to be healthy with cancer now!” says Anne.

Driven by a desire to make a difference in the lives of others affected by this disease, Ann launched a head-shaving fundraiser in Victoria, British Columbia called ‘A Breath of Fresh Hair.’ The fundraiser aimed at raising funds for ovarian cancer research, advocacy, and support in her community.

“Let’s take control of losing our hair and create a celebration of life and love instead,” says Ann.

On April 9, 2022, the sun was shining at Fort Common Park, and Ann was joined by her family, friends and many new faces. Ann, her sister and her brother-in-law were all shorn in celebration and solidarity.

The family’s head-shaving fundraiser set out to raise $10,000 in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada and they raised over $26,000.

Today, Ann continues to advocate for those affected who are taking charge of their treatment and encourages self-advocacy. Ann is a community champion.
