Clinical Trials
A clinical trial is a study to determine whether a new treatment is safe and effective. Clinical trials recruit cancer patients in order to evaluate new treatments.
Before new treatment is tested with patients, it is studied in laboratories to learn more about the effect it has on human cells or animals. While these lab results may differ from the treatment’s effect on actual patients, this process helps to demonstrate safety and identify which methods are most likely to be effective.
Results of pre-clinical research are then tested with patients in efforts to discover new and improved treatment options.
All clinical trials are conducted in the same centres that provide standard treatment for cancer. Any new treatment may come with known or unknown risks, and potential benefits.
