ABOUT THE PROJECT
The University of Saskatchewan’s Gynecologic Oncology Biobank is helping to improve ovarian cancer research in Saskatchewan by making it easier for researchers to access fresh, high-quality tissue samples and matched blood samples. Fresh tissue is essential for cutting-edge research techniques, like growing tissue models, studying the tumor environment, and mapping genetic changes.
Before the biobank was established in 2021, researchers faced an extensive and complex process to access tissue samples from the pathology archives, requiring ethics approval, which often delayed research. The biobank streamlines this process by providing ethically approved, annotated, and high-quality research specimens quickly, allowing researchers to focus on their studies without additional administrative barriers. This funding supports the ongoing management of the biobank for one year, including:
- Overseeing the procurement of fresh tissue, facilitating macroscopic examination and dissection for research use;
- Continuing to provide high-quality, clinically annotated biospecimens for research, ensuring timely access to fresh samples;
- Maintaining the collection of matched blood and tissues for research on novel liquid biopsies techniques;
- Expanding the collection of biospecimens from diverse tissue types, including gynecological, breast, gastrointestinal, bone and soft tissue, and pediatric samples;
- Supporting ongoing research projects utilizing biobank specimens and collaborate with researchers on new studies.
