Beyond the diagnosis: Living with purpose, hope and resilience
A patient advocate panel with Janice Michaud, ovarian cancer patient advocate; Michelle Richter, Breast cancer patient advocate; and more.
A cancer diagnosis changes everything; it can also be the start of something powerful. This inspiring session explores how those affected by ovarian and breast cancer can lead a life of purpose, hope, and resilience beyond diagnosis. Through personal stories and shared experiences, you will discover the value of taking an active role in your care, the power of community, and how giving back can enhance personal well-being. Whether you’re living with ovarian cancer, are a caregiver or supporter, this session offers a powerful reminder: cancer may change your life, but it doesn’t have to define it.

Speaker biographies
Jamie Woytiuk is a therapeutic photographer, facilitator, and social worker who brings both professional training and lived experience into her work. With a Bachelor of Social Work, and training in phototherapy, therapeutic photography, and expressive arts, Jamie blends her understanding of human experience with the creative power of photography. She also works as a documentary photographer, capturing stories of legacy and witnessing how images can hold memory, honour life, and nurture healing.
For Jamie, photography has been a lifeline – a way to hold complexity, notice quiet moments of beauty, and give voice to what often lives beneath the surface. She invites others into this process, guiding them to use images not as technical exercises, but as a language of reflection, self-expression, and connection.
Her sessions create spaces that are gentle, open, and deeply respectful of each person’s story. Participants are free to explore, honour what they carry, and engage with images in ways that feel meaningful, personal, and quietly transformative.
Michelle Richter is an arts educator with over 20 years experience as a teacher. She has led numerous arts-based workshops for students and teachers alike. Michelle was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2023 and has undergone chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. She was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer to her liver in 2024. Michelle belly dances as a way to be present, connect to her body and heal emotional wounds. Dance and the arts have always been an important part of her life, and even more so after her cancer diagnosis. She is convinced in the power of the arts to express and heal.
